Aust Leads Top-ranked Terps on Senior Day

from press release

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team honored its stellar senior class with a 17-8 victory against Dartmouth Sunday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

The Terps (16-0, 4-0 ACC) were led by Alex Aust, who racked up six goals and one assist. The senior moved into sole possession of third on the Maryland all-time career assists list with 120. Katie Schwarzmann, Kelly McPartland, Taylor Cummings, Brooke Griffin and Halle Majorana added two goals each as the Terps capped a perfect home regular season.

Sporting a starting lineup full of all eight seniors, Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Cummings, Schwarzmann and McPartland. Dartmouth was unable to score until a Courtney Bennett tally with 17:31 left in the first and utilized a stall attack for the majority of the first half.

Following a pair of Aust scores a minute apart around the 14-minute mark, Hanna Bowers took a significant angle off the side of the cage for two top shelf goals to shrink Maryland's lead to two with 8:28 remaining in the first.

But the Terps answered with a devastating 4-0 run to close the first stanza, with scores coming from four different players including Cummings, Griffin, McPartland and Majorana. The drive gave Maryland a six-goal cushion heading into the break.

Schwarzmann kicked off the second with a goal at 27:33 following a caused turnover by senior Iliana Sanza. Dartmouth answered seven seconds later with a transition goal for a 10-4 score.

Aust made it a hat trick with a wraparound goal at 24:37 and following two Big Green goals in a 32-second span, tallied three straight in less than three minutes for Maryland's largest lead of the game at 14-6.After a Dartmouth timeout with 18 minutes left, the Big Green stopped Maryland's run with another angled goal by Sarah Byrne. Griffin caused a turnover in the midfield to help the Terps not only kill a penalty chance after a Jen Mendez yellow card, but her ensuing transition resulted in a man-down score for a 15-7 Maryland edge with 15:28 remaining.

Majorana put the Terps up by nine with an assisted goal from fellow rookie Alice Mercer and the two teams exchanged goals - including a score by senior Camilla Hayes - to close the scoring at 17-8.

Senior Kasey Howard registered her fifth career double-digit save performance with 10.

"It's a day we get to celebrate a great group of women," head coach Cathy Reese said. "They've had four outstanding years here and we've got great senior leadership. It was special for them to get to start the game together and finish the game together and just enjoy a beautiful day out here with our great fans. I think they had a blast today which is what our goal was."

Maryland heads to Virginia Tech to conclude the regular season slate next Saturday at noon.
