Cal Holds Off San Diego State
from press release
SAN DIEGO - Behind five goals from Megan Takacs and seven points from Melissa Humphrey, the California women's lacrosse team topped San Diego State, 13-11, in San Diego on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Cal remained undefeated in MPSF contests at 6-0, and improved to 9-4 overall. In addition, the Bears have now won six of their last seven and remained undefeated when scoring 10 or more goals this season.
"We're pretty excited to get two wins on this trip," head coach Ginger Miles said. "These were two emotional wins, and we played today on short rest. I'm proud of the way our girls hung in there, especially when it got tight down the stretch and we really had to dig deep to pull out the win."
The Aztecs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the contest, but the Golden Bears scored six of the next eight goals in the first half to take a 6-4 lead at the half. Humphrey and Takacs each notched two of their goals in the first half.
Takacs and Humphrey, a nearby native of Coronado, Calif., also scored the first two goals of the second half, giving Cal a four-goal lead.
The Bears then endured SDSU scoring five unanswered goals to regain the lead at 9-8 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Cal controlled the final eight minutes of the contest, scoring five of the last seven goals to garner the victory. Takacs scored two of her five goals in that stretch to help clinch the win.
"We lost two critical draws during that stretch, but we knew if we could get some draws and some stops on defense that our offense would score a couple back for us," Miles said. "We played with a ton of heart and we really needed that to match SDSU's energy today."
Takacs is now seven goals away from becoming Cal's all-time leader in that category. Now with 173 career points, Takacs ranks third in that category, four shy of second. In all-time career assists, Humphrey is now 14 helpers shy of first.
"Megan had another big game today, she's pretty hard to stop," Miles said. "She does a great job of also creating opportunities for her teammates, as well."Gaby Christman also contributed two goals, while Amelia Burke and Paige Gasparino notched scores as well.
Cal heads home now for the final two games of the regular season. The Bears will face Denver next on Friday, April 19, at 5 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
