George Washington Edges by Duquesne

from press release

WASHINGTON – The George Washington lacrosse team was edged by Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne, 6-5, on Sunday in its final home game of the season and Senior Day at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

Junior Lindsey DiAntonio paced the Colonials (8-6, 3-2 A-10) with two goals and an assist on the afternoon, while sophomores Jamie Bumgardner and Allie Rash and senior Nicole Lacey all scored once. Lacey has now tallied 99 goals in her career and is just one goal shy of becoming the fifth Colonials' player to join the century club. Senior Jess Hicks set aside seven shots between the pipes in her final home contest.

In a battle of defensive efforts, neither team led by more than three at any point of the game. GW caused seven of Duquesne's nine turnovers as the Colonials held the Dukes (9-5, 4-1 A-10) to their second-lowest goal production of the season.

GW struck first and took a 2-0 lead in the opening 1:54 of action with an unassisted goal from Bumgardner and a free position goal from Lacey. Duquesne answered, however, and took a 3-2 lead at the 9:57 mark on three straight unassisted tallies from Meredith Dunn, Clare Hurley and Amanda Kidder.

DiAntonio chipped in the Buff and Blue's final goal of the half at 11:34, and Kidder added two more for the Dukes as the visitors took a 5-3 lead into the break.

Both squads stood scoreless until midway through the second half when Caitlin Prince converted a free position shot at 14:34 to put Duquesne up, 6-3. DiAntonio found an open Rash 1:32 later to cut the deficit to two at 6-4, but neither team could find the back of the net over the next 11:30.
