"I'm proud of our student-athletes. They dealt with a lot of adversity today. Although we didn't have our best effort, we still found a way to persevere and pulled out a great road win."
--Head Coach Joe Spallina
Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead 49 ticks into the game and led, 9-3, at the half, but UMBC would not go away.
With the Seawolves up, 14-7, with 12:51 remaining in the second stanza, Caridi made a save on a shot by Sam Nolan that was headed for the top left corner, but Stony Brook turned it over moments later. Harkey found Abby Wilson on the doorstep for a goal to cut the margin to six, 14-8.
Harkey struck with a tally of her own more than four minutes later when she scored on a free position shot to bring the Retrievers within five, 14-9, at the 8:10 mark.
The rally would end there, as Michelle Rubino controlled the ensuing draw and later in the possession blew past a UMBC defense for a goal that put the lead back at six, 15-9 with 5:45 to play.
Harkey had a chance to once again close the gap to five on a free position shot, but Caridi made the stop to help the Seawolves secure their first-ever win against UMBC in Baltimore.
