Ewing, Artuso Lead San Diego State Over Fresno
from press release
FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Bailey Ewing and
freshman Felice Artuso scored three goals apiece, as the San Diego
State Lacrosse team defeated Fresno State, 18-8, in Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play on Saturday afternoon.
The Aztecs (8-4, 3-1) went 2-1 on this week's road trip, and have already eclipsed their number of wins in conference play last season. Juniors Isabelle Pickett, Christina Ricciardulli and sophomore Grace Korandovich each scored two goals, while sophomore Michaela Jarvis scored a goal and dished out three assists.
Jarvis also recorded three groundballs, Artuso recorded a game-high eight draw controls and senior goalkeeper Sammy Slattery finished with seven saves. The Aztecs out-shot Fresno State, 34-19, and also had a 21-7 edge in draw controls. In addition, SDSU held Fresno State's leading scorer Marcy Levatino scoreless with no assists, and only allowed her to take two shots.
SDSU took control of the game early in the first half with three-straight goals by Pickett, Ewing and Jarvis to pull ahead, 4-1, with 24:43 left in the first half. The Aztecs went on a 5-0 run later in the first half, highlighted by Ricciardulli's two goals within 28 seconds to extend the lead to 9-3 with 9:22 remaining before halftime.
A 6-0 spurt by the Aztecs that started in the first half and spilled over into the second helped SDSU put the game out of reach. Goals by junior Meris Walsh, sophomore Sophie Koubek and Korandovich pushed the lead to 13-4 at halftime, and scores by Artuso, Pickett and Ewing to begin the second half made it 16-4 with 25:34 remaining.
Paula Badali scored five goals for Fresno State (2-9, 0-4 MPSF), while Natalie Harrington finished with two goals and an assist. The Bulldogs have lost nine of their last 10 games.
