Burek Leads Albany Over UNH in America East Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior attack Rachael Burek carried over her non-conference success with seven points in the America East Conference opener to help the University at Albany defeat New Hampshire, 11-6, on Sunday, March 24 at John Fallon Field.

Behind Burek's seven points, UAlbany's (6-3, 1-0 America East) Maureen Keggins and Rachel Bowles eached recorded hat tricks to lead the offense. Senior Ariana Parker paced the defense with four of the team's 12 total caused turnovers.

A very defensive first half with both teams forcing 10 turnovers a piece, the Wildcats grabbed an early 2-1 lead with 16:11 left in the half. Molly Gaffey and Jenny Simpson each recorded a goal during the stretch.

The Great Danes came back scoring the next two of three goals to tie the game at three with 9:07 to play. Bowles and Parker found the back of the net during the run.

Both teams combined three goals in the final 24 seconds of the half. UAlbany ended up with the one-goal lead following a seven-second scamper from Burek to Keggins to record the final goal of the half.

Following a tight one-goal difference in the first half, 6-5, UAlbany turned up the heat in the second half. The Great Danes extended their lead to two, 7-5, in just over a minute begin the half. Bowles converted the game's lone free-position opportunity, which was her second goal of the game.

New Hampshire (2-6, 0-1 America East) responded back from the stick of Laura Puccia to cut the deficit to one, 7-6, with 24:20. The goal was Puccia's second goal of the contest.

Burek and Bowles tallied goals in the next 17 minutes to extend the Great Dane lead to three, 9-6, with 7:05 remaining in the contest. The Great Dane defense did not allow a goal in the final seven minutes and added two more on offense to grab a five goal lead, 11-6, to begin the conference schedule 1-0.

UAlbany goalkeeper Anna Berman tallied five saves on 11 chances to improve to 6-3 between the pipes. UNH goalkeeper Kathleen O'Keefe fell to 2-5 on the season having recorded seven saves on 18 chances.

UAlbany looks ahead to Stony Brook on Saturday, March 31 at Stony Brook, N.Y at 1 p.m.
