No. 1 Maryland's Defense Stifles Stony Brook

from press release

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team capped its weekend action with a stellar defensive effort in an 8-3 win at No. 18 Stony Brook Sunday.

Maryland (9-0, 3-0 ACC) held its opponent to a mere eight shots for the second consecutive game and allowed only eight goals in two victories on the weekend. Katie Schwarzmann led the offense with a hat trick and Alex Aust recorded four points on two goals and two assists.

The Terps surrendered the first goal of the game five minutes into the match and was held off the scoreboard until a pair of goals by Schwarzmann and Brooke Griffin in a two-minute period around the 15-minute mark gave Maryland a 2-1 lead.

Claire Petersen knotted the game at 12:33 but Schwarzmann capped her hat trick with two goals and the defense limited the Seawolves to one score in the final 10 minutes of the stanza for a 4-3 lead at the half.

The tenacious defensive effort continued into the second half as Maryland held Stony Brook - a team averaging 16.5 goals a game heading into Sunday's game - without a goal the entire period. Goals by Taylor Cummings, Aust (2) and Griffin ended the scoring at 8-3.

The Terps, led by Schwarzmann, shut down one of the nation's top scorers Demmiane Cook, who was held without a goal on the day before posting 29 through six games prior. Kelly McPartland and Cummings paced Maryland with three ground balls each.

"Defensively, we put together a really great weekend and challenged ourselves by playing two good opponents in two days," head coach Cathy Reese said.

Maryland will end its three-game road swing with a contest at William & Mary Wednesday.
