No. 20 Navy Sails Past Bison in Snow-shortened Win

from press release

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The No. 20/15 Navy women's lacrosse team (8-1, 2-0 PL) won a snow-shortened game at Bucknell (1-7, 0-2 PL) by a 9-3 score at Graham Field on Saturday. The game was called with 11:16 remaining in the second half due to extremely poor weather conditions and a snow-covered playing field.

NCAA women's lacrosse games need to reach the 48-minute mark to become official and the game officials decided to call the game at the first stoppage after that point. The game was originally scheduled for 1:00 PM but was moved up to 11:00 AM in hopes of missing the snow storm.

"We went back-and-forth with Bucknell in the first half but then we were able to take control before halftime," said head coach Cindy Timchal. "We played in some really tough weather conditions today and the field had basically become unplayable when the officials called it."

Junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) led Navy with six goals and senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) had five points on one goal and four assists.

It took Navy just 58 seconds to score as DePompeo buried an unassisted tally at 29:02 to put Navy up, 1-0. Gennaro then scored her first goal of the game, also unassisted, six minutes later.

Bucknell responded with back-to-back goals, first on a strike by Sam Rickels and then 1:01 later on a goal by Claire Switala.

Navy regained the lead two minutes later when senior Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) drove in to score. Bucknell evened the game at 3-3 with 9:11 remaining when Sophie Kleinert found the back of the cage.

The Mids then took over for the final nine minutes of the first half, scoring six unanswered goals to break the game open and take a 9-3 halftime lead. The 6-0 run started when DePompeo found Gennaro for a goal at 8:36. Just 24 seconds later, Gennaro scored her third goal of the day.

A minute and 20 seconds later DePompeo assisted on another Gennaro goal as the junior from Havertown, Pa. registered her third in a row. DePompeo then assisted on Young's second goal at 3:35.

Gennaro scored yet again with 1:39 remaining in the first half, and then scored her sixth goal of the first half off another assist from DePompeo 24 seconds later.

Navy had five possessions in the second half and Bucknell had four. Neither team scored or even registered a shot after halftime. The game was eventually called with 11:16 remaining as the snow continued to fall and the playing surface continued to deteriorate.

Gennaro's six goals came on just six shots as she continued to have success against Bucknell in her career. The lefty had seven goals and an assist at Bucknell as a freshman and scored three goals against the Bison as a sophomore last season. Gennaro moved in to sole possession of fourth place in the Navy record books with 132 career goals.

Young scored two goals to go along with two ground balls and moved into a tie for first place at Navy with 2012 graduate Kierstin King by starting her 72nd career game. Twin sister Beth Young (Berwyn, Pa.) is right behind her with 71 career starts.

Junior midfielder Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) and senior defender Emily Mellin (Sherwood Forest, Md.) each caused three turnovers and Coughlin also had two ground balls. Junior Molly Hamilton (New Albany, Ohio) led Navy with three draw controls.

Sophomore goalie Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) improved to 6-1 on the season, allowing three goals, making one save, grabbing three ground balls and caused one turnover in 48:27 minutes of play.

Navy outshot Bucknell, 15-9, and held a 14-10 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were even at 7-7.

Navy is now 6-0 all-time against Bucknell.

The Mids will next travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to take on first-time opponent George Washington (5-2) at 4:00 PM.
