Bilney Scores Five, UMBC Rolls Mount St. Mary's

from press release

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse's junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) registered a career-high five goals, as the Retrievers picked up their third victory in their last four tries with an 18-4 win against Mount St. Mary's in Friday night's non-conference matchup at UMBC Stadium.

The black and gold had seven different players score in the contest, including hat tricks from sophomore Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and junior Mary Milligan (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC). Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State), the Retrievers' points leader, added two goals and four assists for six points on the night.

UMBC (5-2) took control from the start, scoring 50 seconds into the contest. Semones snuck in-between two defenders and bounced a shot past MTSM goalkeeper Sarah Jane Leder. The Mount tried to maintain possession and was in no rush to get shots off. Attack Lindsay Diaz finally ripped off a shot at the 22:01 mark of the first half for the unassisted equalizer. The Retrievers responded by scoring a pair of goals within 22 seconds of each other for the 3-1 advantage. Sophomore attack Jordan Lyons (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's Secondary) found an open cutter in Milligan for the first score and Lyons was on the receiving end of a pass from Semones for the second.

The black and gold punched home two more quick scores, the first coming at 17:51 from Semones, followed by Bilney's first of the evening at 17:22. Junior midfielder Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) scored UMBC's fifth-straight goal to put the Retrievers out in front 6-1. Although Mount St. Mary's was able to stop the bleeding with a free position goal from Hannah Gutcher, the Retrievers connected on two more free position shots in the half, and Wilson added a riffle into the top corner of the net to put the Retrievers up 9-2.

The Mount netted a goal with six seconds remaining in the first half, but they would score just one more time in the contest, being outscored 9-1 in the period. On the season, the Retrievers are holding a 53-29 advantage in second half goals.

Freshman Brittany Marquess (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) tallied her first two collegiate goals to conclude the Retrievers scoring.

UMBC held a 17-6 advantage in draw controls and outshot the Mount 34-10 in the contest.

The Retrievers hit the road for a pair of contests next week, starting with Monday's matchup at Wagner. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
