Marist Snags First Win Against Binghamton
from press release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - After showing glimpses of its potential over the first four games of the 2013 season, the Marist women's lacrosse team was firing on all cylinders in its road game at Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Foxes earned their first win with an 11-6 victory over the Bearcats.
A 6-2 halftime advantage would be all that Marist would need on their way to the wire-to-wire win. Sophomore Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) led all scorers with four points with two goals and two assists; in total five Red Foxes had two goals.
Both offenses on Wednesday started slowly as neither team broke through onto the scoreboard for nearly 10 minutes. Binghamton had the first opportunity when Katherine Hunsberger fired a free-position shot on goal only to be denied by senior goalie Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.).
Sophomore Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) netted the game's first goal with an unassisted marker at 20:26.
Back-to-back goals by junior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) and senior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) at 18:36 and 17:48 sprung the Red Foxes out to a 3-0 lead.
Two consecutive goals by the Bearcats tightened the game back up before Marist would close out the half on another 3-0 run.
Junior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) found sophomore Sabrina Mattera (Wantagh, N.Y.) for the team's first goal at 6:21. Viscount had her hand the final two scores of the half as she assisted Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 4:15 and notched an unassisted goal with just 11 seconds on clock.
Up 6-2, Marist saw Binghamton net its first goal of the second period 2:35 in as Hunsberger connected on a free-position shot.
Tuck's second goal of the game at 24:11 would put the Red Foxes back in front by four.
Their lead would shrink down to two less than five minutes later when Binghamton registered back-to-back goals at 20:16 and 19:24.
Four straight goals by Marist would add insurance as it grew its lead to 11-5 with 3:15 left in regulation. Miller started the scoring at 12:48 with an unassisted tally. After assisting Mattera's marker at 12:27, Viscount would notch her second goal and fourth point of the afternoon at 8:06. Brannigan finished the scoring streak at 3:15.
A late Bearcat goal at 2:15 made the final score 11-6.
For the game, Marist outshot Binghamton 21-16 with a 17-12 advantage in shots on goal. The Red Foxes also held advantages in ground balls 11-8, draw controls 10-9 and caused turnovers 8-2.
In goal, Casiano finished with six saves as she earned her 14th career victory.
With the win, Marist improves to 6-1 all-time versus Binghamton.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Wednesday, March 13 at home versus nationally ranked Stony Brook. The opening draw between the teams is slated for 4 p.m.
