Holy Cross Starts on 6-0 Run, Races Past Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-- The Holy Cross Crusaders opened with a 6-0 run on their way to a 16-8 win over Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers were led by junior Jacqueline Zlevor (Medfield, MA) who scored a career-high three goals in the loss. SHU is 0-2 to open the year.
The Crusaders (3-2) had a pair of four goal scorers in Kat Sutton and Laura Ryan, who also added an assist. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Weber turned in 12 saves to earn the win.
HC built their opening 6-0 led in the game's first five and a half minutes. Sara Hennessey, Taylor Zebrowski and Laura Ryan scored the first three for Holy Cross, forcing a SHU time-out at 25:46. Zebrowski tallied her second at 25:33 and Kat Sutton and Hennessey went back to back at 24:33 and 24:19 for a six goal advantage with 24:19 on the clock.
SHU's Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) ended the SHU drought with an 8-meter goal at 16:18 and the Pioneers added first half goals from junior Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) and Zlevor but the Crusaders would go to the half with an 8-3 lead.
Holy Cross opned the second half with a run, this time a three-goal rally off the sticks of Zebrowski, Sutton and Laura Ryan to push their lead to 11-3. SHU was able to cut the lead to 12-6 with consecutive markers from Zlevor and junior Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY) at 11:20 and 10:16 but the Crusaders put the game out of reach over the final 10 minutes outscoring SHU 4-2.
SHU's Russo finished with two goals while freshman Jenna Liljeberg (Wrentham, MA) had a goal and an assist. Vaccaro scored once and assisted on three others. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Keenan (Wantagh, NY) made 11 saves in taking the loss.
