George, Coppa Help UNC Tame Penn

PHILADELPHIA - North Carolina (3-1) got four goals from junior Taylor George and three from juniorBrittney Coppa as the third-ranked Tar Heels won, 11-5, at No. 17 Penn (0-2) on Saturday afternoon in women's lacrosse action. The win was Carolina's first-ever victory at Penn, having gone 0-3 at Franklin Field prior to Saturday.
George scored her four goals on five shots, and Coppa only needed three shots to score three times. Carolina also got two goals from junior Abbey Friend, a goal and an assist from freshman Aly Messinger and a goal and two caused turnovers from senior Kara Cannizzaro. Emily Garrity led UNC with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
George scored twice as the Tar Heels jumped out to a quick, 4-0 lead in the first 10:20 of the game. After Penn scored on a free position shot at the 18:43 mark, Cannizzaro, George and Friend scored as Carolina ripped off three more goals in a row in just over two minutes to take a 7-1 lead with 11:21 left in the half.
The Tar Heels and Quakers each scored two more goals in the opening period and Carolina led 9-3 at the break.
Carolina out-shot Penn 14-11 in the first 30 minutes, and Tar Heel senior Lauren Maksym made six first-half saves.
Penn scored quickly after halftime, cutting the lead to 9-4 with an unassisted goal from Iris Williams just 19 minutes into the period. Neither team scored for almost the next 15 minutes, however, with UNC maintaining a 9-5 advantage.
Coppa and Friend each scored unassisted goals in the final 2:43 of the game to give the Tar Heels their final, 11-5 victory.
Maksym made the start and played all 60 minutes in goal for Carolina, picking up her fourth win of the season. She made eight saves, including six in the first half.
UNC will return to action next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill against Virginia in its 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
