STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's women's lacrosse team picked up its second win of the season with a 10-5 victory over Wagner on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field. With the win, the Hawks handed the Seahawks their first loss of the season and improved to 11-0 all-time against Wagner. The Hawks are 2-0 for the first time since 2001.
Trailing 1-0 at the 26:45 mark of the first half, graduate student Meghan McDevitt netted her fifth goal of the season to start a 5-0 run that ended with two consecutive goals from the stick of junior attack Abby Ananian.
Wagner (2-1) added another goal with 6:18 remaining in the first half but the Hawks would lead 5-2 heading into halftime.
Just 1:50 into the second half, SJU went on a 4-0 run that saw McDevitt and junior midfielder Val Paolucci each score their second goals of the game to extend the Hawks' lead, 9-2.
The Seahawks charged back as Gretchen Fay netted two of three consecutive goals for Wagner, but McDevitt netted the final goal of the game at the 6:16 mark to seal the 10-5 victory for Saint Joseph's.
McDevitt led all scorers with three goals on the afternoon and added one of SJU's two assists on the day. Her assist on Paolucci's first goal at the 22:49 mark of the first half tied McDevitt for fourth all-time in SJU career assists (38) with former Hawk Jenna Martino (2007-10).
Paolucci and Ananian added two goals each while four different Hawks picked up two ground balls apiece.
For the second consecutive game, senior Alisha Aquilino and freshman Genevieve Giblin (1-0) teamed up in goal, with the veteran playing the first 30 minutes and the rookie guarding the net in the latter half, and for the second consecutive game, the pair have combined for the win.
