GW Dominates Draws in Victory over George Mason
from press release
WASHINGTON -- Six different players scored as the George Washington lacrosse team defeated local rival George Mason, 10-6, on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
After holding a 3-2 lead at halftime, GW (2-2) out-scored George Mason (0-3) in the second half, 7-4, to secure the victory and even its record. The Colonials controlled possession by winning 15-of-18 draw controls, and they out-shot the Patriots, 25-21, as they forced the visitors to make 11 saves on the day.
Freshman Olivia Boudreau tallied a game-high four goals for GW - including the first of her collegiate career - and junior Jamie Bumgardner (1 g, 2 a) and senior Nicole Lacey (2 g, 1 a) each added three points. Juniors Jordy Bathras and Lindsey DiAntonio and sophomore Rachel Miachipped in one goal apiece and senior goalkeeper Jess Hicks set aside six shots.
"It feels great to get the win with a complete team effort on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field," head coach Tara Hannaford said. "We won draw controls and maintained possession, and I thought we did a good job controlling the game."
The Patriots recorded the first score of the afternoon just 3:15 into action, but the Colonials countered with a three-goal run over a 5:14 span to take a 3-1 lead. Lacey evened the score at 1-1 at the 4:08 mark with an unassisted goal, and Bathras and Boudreau each netted unassisted tallies just 35 seconds apart for a two-goal lead. George Mason scored the final goal of the half with 14:51 remaining on the clock to cut GW's lead to one as the squad's entered halftime with a 3-2 score.
The Colonials opened the second frame with back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 5-2. Bumgardner connected with an open Mia just 33 seconds into the half, and Boudreau scored on a free position shot at 4:40. GMU interrupted GW's run with an unassisted goal at 9:33, but the Colonials answered when Boudreau found the back of the net off of a pass from Lacey to widen the lead to 6-3.
The Patriots added their fourth goal midway through the second half but GW went on a 3-0 run over the next 2:38 and the visitors could not find an answer. DiAntonio scored off a pass from Bumgardner at 12:53, followed by two straight goals 41 seconds apart from Bumgardner and Lacey.
George Mason scored on a free position shot with nine minutes remaining on the clock and Boudreau responded with her fourth goal of the day 1:24 later. GMU chipped in the final score of the afternoon with 3:22 left to play.
GW continues its five-game homestand when the Colonials welcome Bucknell on Sunday, March 3 for a 1 p.m. match-up.
