Altomare's Red-Hot Shooting Sends Hofstra to Best Start Since 2005

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore attacker Brittain Altomare continued her torrid start to the 2013 campaign as the Wolfsville, MD native led Hofstra with seven points on four goals and three assists as the Hofstra women's lacrosse team rolled to an easy 14-8 victory over Marist on Wednesday afternoon.
The seven points tied a career high for Altomare, who previously established her career high against George Mason on April 8, 2012.
Hofstra moves to 4-0 on the season, its best start since the 2005 squad also began the season with four straight victories. Marist falls to 0-4 with the loss.
Senior midfielder Emily von Hollen tied her career-high with a pair of goals as Hofstra took a 7-1 halftime advantage and never looked back in cruising past the Red Foxes. Hofstra outshot Marist, 33-16, and held an 11-3 lead midway through the second stanza before Marist scored a few goals late to make the score closer. The Pride closed the contest with three straight goals.
Senior midfielder Maryann Miller got Hofstra on the board less than a minute into the contest as she tallied her first goal of the season off an assist from Altomare with 29:01 showing on the clock.
The Pride would eventually score the first five goals of the game, including a tally from freshman midfielder Becky Conto at the 11:56 mark of the first half. In all, Hofstra held Marist scoreless for the first 19:55 of the game until Lexi Brannigan found the back of the net for the Red Foxes.
Senior midfielder Jill Maier and Altomare would score Hofstra's final two goals of the half as the Pride went into the break with the commanding 7-1 lead.
Hofstra pushed its lead to as many as eight goals as senior midfielder Casey Kellogg scored her first goal of the season on a free-position shot in the second half to give the Pride the 11-3 advantage.
Marist did answer Hofstra's commanding lead with five straight goals, cutting the deficit to three at 11-8, but Hofstra was never seriously challenged en route to the 14-8 victory.
Maier finished with a team-high five draw controls, while also adding a goal and an assist. Conto chipped in with a pair of caused turnovers, two ground balls and a goal. Junior midfielder Alex Mezzanotte, who led Hofstra with a hat trick against Colgate, picked up a team-best three ground balls against the Red Foxes and added two goals. Sophomore defender April Iannetta had two caused turnovers, two draw controls, a goal and a ground ball to assist in the winning effort.
Sophomore goalie Kelsey Gregerson earned her fourth win of the season with three saves in net.
Tierney Larson had four assists for Marist, while Brannigan posted three goals. Amanda Tuck had a game-high five draw controls.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it travels to #1 Maryland for a 1 p.m. contest. It marks the Pride's first game against the nation's no. 1 ranked team since facing #1 Northwestern in four consecutive years from 2006-2009.
