Schwaab's Hat Trick Sparks Temple
from press release
PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Rachel Schwaab notched the first hat trick of her career with three goal in an 8-7 Temple lacrosse win over Rutgers (1-1) on Wednesday afternoon. Schwaab's final goal tied the game at 6-6 after the Owls had trailed by two, and Temple improves to 2-0 with the victory.
Jaymie Tabor and Stephany Parcell scored two goals apiece for the Owls while Molly Seefried also scored in the win.
The Owls faced a tough challenge in Rutgers goalkeeper Lily Kalata, who made 10 saves on the afternoon and denied Temple on every free-position shot that headed her way.
Rutgers took a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of action. Seefried got Temple on the board in the seventh minute, and the teams traded goals until the Owls finally got two in a row to close out the half. Schwaab's first goal of the game with 5:50 left in the half put the Owls within one, 4-3, but she got the equalizer with 25 seconds to go, sending the teams into halftime tied up at 4-4.
Stephanie Anderson notched a goal and an assist for Rutgers in the first five minutes of the second half to put Temple in a two-goal hole, but the Owls recovered quickly.
Parcell and Schwaab scored within two minutes of each other to tie the game at 6-6 with over 21 minutes remaining, and the Owls' defense allowed just one Rutgers goal in the final 24 minutes of the game.
With 13:18 remaining, Parcell put the Owls up by one after a hectic series on offense. Six minutes later Tabor scored what would prove to be the game-winner, giving Temple a cushion. Megan Clements put one in the net for the Scarlet Knights with 1:36 remaining, but the Owls held strong through a number of fouls by the Scarlet Knights in the remaining time.
Jackie Mercer and Parcell each caused turnovers in the final minute and 21 seconds, and picked up the ground balls to help ensure the Owls had possession when it counted most.
Temple has two games left in its four-game homestand to begin the season. Next up is a 1:00 p.m. contest against Lehigh on Saturday, Feb. 23.
