Lafayette Opens with Win Over Marist
from press release
EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women’s
lacrosse team opened the season with a home win over Marist, 12-8,
on Saturday afternoon inside Fisher Stadium. Seniors Cammie
Linville and Jessica Rothstein led the way with three goals apiece
for the Leopards.
Lafayette added contributions from senior Addie Godfrey and junior Ana White, who each chipped in with two goals and two assists. Freshman Carlianne McCabe notched her first career goal, while senior Victoria Maxon netted her first goal of the season.
Linville led the Leopards with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Laura Kleiber and Ana White both grabbed three ground balls. White and senior Laura Rowan were tied for second on the team with two caused turnovers.
Lafayette goalie Meghan Curtin got the win making three saves, while Marist goalie Ashley Casiano notched four saves in the loss.
Marist was led offensively by Amanda Tuck and Ashley Miller who each scored two goals. Tuck also lead the Red Foxes in ground balls with four and tied with teammate Lexi Brannigan in caused turnovers with two. Jamie Romano dished out a game-high three assists for Marist.
Despite the Red Foxes winning 14 of the 21 draw controls and outshooting the Leopards, 22-21, Lafayette made up for it by picking up nine more ground balls (21-12) and forcing 22 Marist turnovers. The Leopards also took advantage of two of their four free position opportunities.
Marist scored two of the first three goals, starting the scoring at the 24:22 mark of the first half on a goal by Sabrina Mattera, but Lafayette answered back a minute later with a goal from Jessica Rothstein. Amanda Tuck gave Marist the lead with 20:26 left in the first half.
The Leopards rattled off five straight after that and never looked back. Freshman Carlianne McCabe scored the first in the spurt with 16:06 left in the first session, followed less than twenty seconds later by Addie Godfrey’s first goal of the season.
Rothstein netted her second of the game on an assist from Ana White. White then scored a goal of her own with 11:53 remaining in the first half to stretch the Leopards’ lead to 5-2. Linville finished the 5-0 run with her first goal of the season on a pass from Rothstein.
A Marist goal slowed the Lafayette attack before Rothstein finished her third goal of the half on a feed from Godfrey with 3:21 remaining. The Leopards took a commanding 7-3 lead into halftime.
White started the second half with her second goal of the game. Linville followed that with back-to-back goals of her own to push the Lafayette lead to seven at 10-3 with 21:31 on the clock.
Marist and Lafayette exchanged goals with the Red Foxes cutting the lead to 10-4, but Godfrey answered back with her third goal of the game at the 19:53 mark and Victoria Maxon scored Lafayette’s final goal with 7:39 left in the game. Marist scored the final three goals, but the Leopards held on for a 12-8 win in their season and home opener.
