Navy Cruises Past Winthrop in Opener

from press release

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Junior Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) scored six goals and senior Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) had seven points (2G, 5A) to lead the Navy women's lacrosse team (1-0) to a 23-4 win over Winthrop (1-1) in its season opener on Sunday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

"We wanted to come out strong and we did that in today's game," said head coach Cindy Timchal. "I was really happy with the level of our performance. We were really clicking offensively and we played tough defensively to limit [Winthrop's] goal-scoring today."

The Mids scored the game's first four goals and raced out to a 14-1 lead in the first 20 minutes. Senior attacker Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) scored all four of her goals in the game's first 12 minutes and Gennaro scored five goals in the first 18.

Navy took a 16-2 lead into halftime and then outscored the Eagles, 7-2, in the second half. Timchal was able to get 34 players into the contest and used three different goalies.

Gennaro scored her six goals on just seven shots and she was one shy of her career-best goal total of seven. At one point in the first half, she scored back-to-back goals in an 11-second span. Gennaro notched her 17th-career hat trick.

DePompeo matched her career-high of five assists and now has 101 in her career, the highest total in Navy history. DePompeo scored at least five points for the 21st time and her seven points are two shy of her career high. The 2013 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year spread the wealth, assisting on goals by four different players.

Young had a career-best nine draw controls to go along with her four goals and sophomore Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) chipped in with five draw controls, two goals and one assist. Navy held a 20-9 edge in draw controls.
