Oosting Scores Seven in Griffins' Win Over Siena
from press release
Behind a career day from senior midfielderMegan Oosting, the Canisius College women's lacrosse team remained perfect in MAAC play with a 16-11 win at Siena on Wednesday afternoon. The Griffs are now 2-0 in league play and even their overall record at 5-5, while the Saints drop to 2-9 and 0-2 against MAAC foes."A win is a win but we didn't play our best today," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "Siena outworked us in certain areas. We need to play with more discipline defensively and take care of the ball. What saved us today was that we shot the ball pretty well. We need to play better and more of a complete game on Saturday against Fairfield if we hope to win."
Oosting enjoyed a career day on the offensive end to lead the Griffs to the victory. The senior midfielder netted a personal-high seven goals (on just nine shot attempts). Oosting also added three draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover in the win.
Senior Carly Quinn paced the Canisius offense with a game-high four assists. Senior Theresa Walton, junior Lindsey Morgan and freshman Tori Quinn all netted two goals for the Griffs, with senior Kristy Wilensky, junior Morgan Leonard and sophomore Maria Kotas rounding out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each.
Freshman Kayla Scully recorded six saves in net, while Leonard, Morgan and sophomore Gabby Kotas anchored the Canisius defense with three caused turnovers each.
Canisius got out to a strong start in the contest, netting six of the game's first seven goals. Walton gave the Griffs the lead for good with the first tally of the game 21 seconds in before Tori Quinn followed at the 23:46 mark. After Siena got on the scoreboard, the Griffs netted the next four goals with two by Oosting and one each of Leonard and Tori Quinn for a commanding 6-1 lead halfway through the first.
Siena fought back and after a 5-2 run in the next 12-plus minutes, the Saints pulled to within two, 8-6. Canisius reclaimed its momentum right before the half when Wilenskey scored with 1:25 left in the first and Oosting added her fourth goal of the game with just 15 seconds remaining before halftime as the teams headed into the intermission with the Griffs ahead, 10-6.
Canisius quickly stretched its lead to five early in the second stanza but the Saints once again clawed their way back into the contest, outscoring the Griffs, 4-1, over the next 10 minutes to pull back within two, 12-10.
Oosting ended the Siena momentum, however, and gave Canisius control of the game with two tallies followed by Morgan's first goal of the contest for a 15-10 lead with 11:19 left in regulation. Both teams added one tally the remainder of the game as the Griffs improved to 2-0 in league play for the second-straight year and for just the fourth time in the program's history with the 16-11 victory.
Canisius finished the contest with a 27-22 advantage in shots despite losing the draw control battle, 17-11. Katie Maguire led the Saints with four goals and seven draw controls, while Kristin Concordia and Danielle DeLisio combined to make seven saves.
The Griffs now prepare to face Fairfield on Saturday in a rematch of the 2011 MAAC Championship, which Canisius won, 13-8. The Griffs host the Stags at the Demske Sports Complex with first draw scheduled for 11 a.m.
