Iona Scores Final Five to Beat Columbia

scored the game-winning goal with 5:33 remaining in the second
half, as the Iona College lacrosse team made a remarkable comeback
winning 11-10 over Ivy league member Columbia University on Friday
Sophomore Brenna Lade tied the game a minute earlier off a beautiful pass by Gregory, as the Gaels once trailed 10-6 early on in the final stanza. An impressive 5-0 run ended the game as the visitors took the final non-conference tune-up of the season.
Senior Casey Scully was an important part to the victory scoring a hat trick in the first half. Freshman Meghan Testoni and Gregory scored both of their tallies during Iona's second half run, which included Lade’s game-tying marker at 6:27. Lade led the team with four points, netting two goals and adding assists on two of the three Scully goals in the opening frame.
Iona finished the game outshooting Columbia 30-20 and finished with a 14-10 advantage in the second half.
Kacie Johnson scored the first three goals for the Lions as they took an early 3-2 lead after opening up the game 2-0. Junior Brittney Mabus tied the game 3-3 with 10:22 remaining in the half, but three consecutive goals by Columbia made it 6-3. Freshman Olivia McCarthy cut the lead back to 6-4.
Scully’s third and final marker of the half came with :56 second remaining to make it a two-goal edge after the first.
Columbia scored three of the next four goals to take a 10-6 lead with 22:43 remaining as Johnson scored her game-high fifth of the night.
Iona sophomore netminder Maria Ortiz bounced back well making eight saves for the victory.
Iona will open up MAAC play on Wednesday when they host Fairfield at 3 p.m. from Mazzella Field.
