Terps' Johnson, Aust Team Up to Drop Towson
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Karri Ellen Johnson scored five goals and Alex Aust dished four assists to lead the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team past Towson 13-3 Tuesday.
All five of Johnson's goals came in the first half and pushed the senior attacker's mark to 215, five shy of No. 2 on the Terps' career goals list. Aust has now tallied 15 points in the last three games. Maryland (10-2, 2-1 ACC) held Towson (6-3) to its lowest goal output this season
The Terps put together arguably their best overall showing of the season, nailing 13 of the 26 shots they attempted on the night. Katie Schwarzmann tallied her fifth consecutive hat trick with a three second-half goals.
Maryland's powerful offense wasted zero time taking command of the contest, registering two goals in the first minute of play courtesy of a pair of Aust assists to Johnson and Kristy Black.
The Terps recorded the first 12 goals of the game and did not allow a Towson goal until Rhiannon Coogle put the Tigers on the board with 19:21 remaining in the game. Johnson netted four goals before the midway mark of the first stanza.
Maryland also dominated the draw, winning the category 14-4. Schwarzmann led the way with six draw controls. Brittany Dipper notched five saves and held Towson scoreless in 37 minutes of work.
"I think that was one of the most complete games we've played this season," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We really stepped up defensively tonight...our defense played great. We did really well in the first half and we gave up some opportunities in the second half but all in all, we were just on fire tonight."
The Terps next embark on a tough, three-game road swing beginning with a match at Penn Friday.
