from press release
NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior All-American Laura Zimmerman tied her career high with five goals to lead the second-ranked Tar Heel women's lacrosse team to a 14-3 win at unranked Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon. Carolina outscored ODU 12-2 in the second half to blow open what had been a close game.
The Tar Heels improve to 9-1 with the victory and bounce back from Saturday's 9-8 loss at Georgetown. ODU falls to 2-5.
Zimmerman also added an assist to finish with six total points in the game, one off her career high of seven (five goals, two assists) in a win at Northwestern in April 2010. Abbey Friend added two goals and an assist for UNC. Jessica Griffin and Becky Lynch each scored twice and Taylor George had a goal and an assist. Emily Garrity and Sam McGee scored single goals, and Courtney Waite had an assist.
Carolina out-shot ODU by a 29-12 margin, including 18-5 in the decisive second half. The Tar Heels also won 13 of 19 draws and forced 20 Monarch turnovers while only turning it over 12 times themselves.
Zimmerman scored UNC's first goal of the game at the 26:48 mark of the first half, only to see see ODU tie it at 1-1 90 seconds later. Neither team scored for more than the next 20 minutes until Lynch made it 2-1 Tar Heels at halftime.
Carolina started the second half with a 5-0 run with three of those goals coming from Zimmerman as the Tar Heels increased their lead to 10-2 with 16 minutes to play. ODU cut it to 10-3, only to see Carolina score four more in a row (two from Friend) for the final 14-3 score.
All three UNC goalkeepers played in the win, with Lauren Maksym starting and playing the first 26:41 of the game, recording two saves. Taylor Thomas played the next 29:55 and picked up her first career win in the cage, also making two saves. Britt Giacco played the final 3:24 in goal.
The Tar Heels will return to action with their fourth consecutive road game next Saturday at Boston College.
