Errington's Career Day Helps UMBC Beat Colgate

from press release

BALTIMORE- Sophomore attacker Taelar Errington (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) scored a career-best three goals and staked UMBC to an early lead as the Retrievers held off Colgate, 13-11, in a non-conference women's lacrosse match-up at UMBC Stadium.

UMBC improved to 3-4 on the season, while the Raiders fell to 1-6.

Junior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J.) led all Retriever scorers with three goals and one assist, while four other Retrievers scored multiple points in the game.

Colgate senior attacker Katie Sullivan led all goal scorers with four.

Errington opened the scoring by converting a free position shot 4:20 into the contest. After senior Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored just 25 seconds later, Errington gave UMBC a 3-0 lead at the 8:01 mark, converting a inside pass from senior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron).

The Raiders cut the lead to 3-2, but Krause scored her 12th of the season at the 12:03 mark and Errington completed her hat trick at the 15:44 mark, giving the hosts a 5-2 advantage.

Colgate would fight back to tie the score at 5-all, but then Cox took control, drawing fouls on a drive to the goal and an inside Raider infraction. She scored on successive free position shots, starting a 4-0 run to end the half. Krause and sophomore midfielder Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va.) scored 11 seconds apart in the final 3:38 of the half to give UMBC a 9-5 halftime advantage.

The Raiders would get as close as 9-7 at the 5:23 mark of the second half, but Cox halted that mini-run with her third free position goal of the game three minutes later. Then, sophomore midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) ripped back-to-back shots in to give UMBC its largest lead at 12-7 with 19:15 remaining.

Colgate outscored UMBC, 4-1, in the final 18:10 and controlled 10 of 11 second-half draws to threaten the Retriever advantage. But UMBC forced a Raider turnover with exactly 4:00 on the clock and were able to run out the clock on the offensive end.

UMBC outshot the visitors, 26-25 and only committed five turnovers on the day. Junior netminderKendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) got credit for the win, making three first half saves. Freshman Anna Barnett (Midland, Texas) stopped six Raider shots in the second half of the contest.

Notes: Cox now has 20 goals on the season... she has three of more goals in four of seven games this season and multiple points in six straight... UMBC improved to 4-0 all-time vs. Colgate... the Retrievers travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Sat., March 17.
