Winless Colgate Opens League Play with Win
from press release
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Katie Sullivan tallied a
career-high seven points on four goals and three of assists to lead
the Colgate women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 win over Lehigh in its
Patriot League opener on Saturday at Tyler's Field.
The Raiders (1-5, 1-0 PL) also saw Courtney Miller record five points on four goals and one assist, while Quincey Spagnoletti and Kate Sheridan each chipped in with three points on a goal and two helpers off the bench. Jennie Berglin had an incredible day in net with 13 stops, including seven in the first half. She earned her first collegiate win and has made double-digit saves in the last two games.
The Mountain Hawks (2-4, 0-1 PL) were led by Carli Sukonik, who posted four goals in the loss. Lauren Murray posted two goals and Leigh Ann Torcivia recorded two points on a goal and an assist. Allison Fayans got the start in net and made three saves in the loss.
The Mountain Hawks came out and earned a quick 3-1 lead with Torcivia, Sukonik and Murray all scoring goals, while Sullivan got the Raiders on the board and her goal tied the game at 1-1. Colgate took its first lead of the game with three-straight goals over a three-minute span and Alison Flood gave the home team a 4-3 lead with 15:30 remaining in the first half. Lehigh got one back to tie it a 4-4 with 12:41 left.
The Raiders then struck for another run of three goals to earn its largest lead at 7-4. Sheridan got it started with her second of the year and then Miller tallied her second of the day. Amanda O'Sullivan scored the final goal of the run on a free-position shot with 5:18 left in the half. Lehigh fought back with two goals in the final minute to cut the lead to 7-6 at halftime.
Colgate didn't let the last two Lehigh goals of the half effect them at the beginning of the second as Sullivan netted her first of four goals in the final 30 minutes to give Colgate an 8-6 lead with the goal coming 43 seconds into the frame. Miller made it 9-6 with a player-up goal on a free-position shot for her third of the afternoon with 25 minutes left in the game.
Lehigh answered with a pair of goals over the next six minutes with Sukonik tallying both scores with one coming on a player-up situation. The teams then went scoreless for over 12 minutes. Lehigh began to stall as the Mountain Hawks looked to set up a few plays.
The long scoring draught ended with 7:31 left in the game with Miller scoring her fourth of the day. The Raiders continued to roll after that with three of the last four goals to close out the game. Sullivan tallied two of the final three scores with Monica White putting home the final goal of the game on a player-up chance with 21 seconds left. The Raiders ended their five-game losing streak and ends their three-game homestand on a good note with a 13-9 win.
Lehigh won most of the stat battle with a 25-23 shot advantage and earned 20 ground balls to Colgate's 14. The Mountains Hawks had an 18-6 edge on draw controls. The visitors hurt themselves with a 2-for-9 on free-position shots and the Raiders forced Lehigh into 14 turnovers. Each team scored on their player-up situations.
Colgate will travel south this week on its annual spring trip to face UMBC on March 14, followed by its second Patriot League contest at American on March 17.
