No. 2 Heels Stay Perfect with Win at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Second-ranked North
Carolina got four goals and two assists from senior Becky Lynch and
four goals from sophomore Abbey Friend and won 14-9 at
eighth-ranked Virginia on Saturday afternoon. With the win,
Carolina's fifth in a row over the Cavliers, UNC improves to 8-0
this season and 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia
falls to 3-3 (0-2 ACC).
Kara Cannizzaro tallied two goals and an assist and Laura Zimmerman had one goal and two assists. Brittney Coppa, Emily Garrity and Jessica Griffin each scored once for Carolina. Taylor George added an assist.
Virginia scored three consecutive goals to open the game, as Liza Blue converted a free position shot, Katie Slater scored an unassisted goal and Josie Owen found Ainsley Baker in front of the goal within the first nine minutes of the contest.
UNC got on the board at the 17:36 mark on a Friend goal, but Baker answered on the other end of the field to keep Virginia's three-goal lead, 4-1. From that point, the Tar Heels outscored the Cavaliers 4-1 for the remainder of the half and the score was tied 5-5 at the break.
In the second half, Carolina went on a 5-1 run, including four unanswered goals, that ended up being the difference in the game. After the teams traded goals to open the half, North Carolina got goals from four different Tar Heels to take a commanding 10-6 lead at the 17:55 mark.
Virginia's Sloan Warren scored a goal down the stretch and Charlie Finnigan added two but the Tar Heels held on for the 14-9 victory.
Tar Heel goalkeeper Lauren Maksym played all 60 minutes and had three saves.
Carolina will return to action next Saturday at Georgetown.
