Cal Doubles Up San Diego State in First Meeting
from press release
SAN DIEGO - Megan Takacs and Alexa Rozelle led
California past first-year program San Diego State, 18-9, by
scoring a game-high five goals each on Saturday at Aztec Field. The
Golden Bears improved to 3-2 (2-1 in the MPSF) after the conference
clash, while the Aztecs fell to 2-3 (0-2 MPSF).
Cal likewise won its previous game - vs. Detroit Mercy on March 8 - by the score of 18-9 in San Diego.
Senior midfielder Vail Horn got Cal on the scoreboard first by converting an eight-meter goal just 37 seconds into the game. After an Aztec eight-meter goal tied the game at 1-1 at 1:10, Cal scored the next three goals to take a 4-1 lead.
Meris Walsh scored the first of her five goals for SDSU with an eight-meter goal of her own at 8:53. But the Bears scored the next seven goals of the game to take a commanding 11-2 lead, with freshman Brittany Ward's strike at 18:50 capping the run.
Walsh and Cal junior midfielder Melissa Humphrey traded goals late in the first half, and Cal took a 12-3 lead into halftime.
Cal and SDSU each scored six goals in the second half, with five Bears - Takacs scoring twice and Rozelle, Humphrey, Horn and freshman Teresa Li each scoring once - tallying goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan McGinnis made 12 saves, with junior and San Diego native Kelly McCarthy making one save in relief. The Aztecs' Sammy Slattery also made 12 saves.
The Bears return to the friendly confines of Witter Rugby Field in Berkeley for their next game - a nonconference match with Boston University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.
