from press release
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Freshman Claire
Andrews added five goals for the Explorers as the squad defeated
Iona, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon.
The win evens La Salle's record to 1-1 on the season.
"We are pleased with the outcome," head coach Candace Taglianetti said. "We accomplished a lot of the goals we set for today. We were a little sloppy in the second half but our determination to win was excellent. Claire had an outstanding day really added a spark to the attack."
La Salle pounded Iona with 22 shots in the first half and jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Andrews scored a pair, junior Lauren McDermott scored two as well, incuding one from behind the back, and senior Nora McGurkin had a score of her own.
Iona would score the next three goals, but a score by Andrews with 33 seconds on the clock gave La Salle a 6-3 halftime lead.
The two teams traded goals to open the second half. The Explorers then added three goals, by freshmen Caitlyn Brostrand and Erin McCabe, as well as Andrews' fifth, in a matter of three and a half minutes to gain a 10-4 advantage with 14:00 to play.
The Gales scored at the 12:25 mark and then added two goals in the last minute of play to make the final 10-7.
McGurkin earned four draw controls. Senior Lauren Bushby and Brostrand each picked up four ground balls.
Senior Megan Corliss made 10 saves in goal.
