Tar Heels Move to 3-0 With Win at Richmond

RICHMOND, VA. - Kara Cannizzaro tallied four goals and one assist and Laura Zimmerman scored four goals as the third-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team won 17-6 in light snow on the road at Richmond on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Carolina improves to 3-0 this season. The Spiders fall to 0-2 with the defeat.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first 29 minutes of the contest and eventually led 16-3 before Richmond tightened the margin late in the game.
Senior attacker Becky Lynch added two goals and two assists and Emily Garrity played well with a goal and three assists for the Tar Heels. Abbey Friend scored three times, Jessica Griffin had two goals and one assist and Morgan Rubin also scored one goal.
Mary Flowers led Richmond with one goal and two assists. Kara Moschetti, Caitlin Fifield, Sam Stevenson, Taylor Blazer and Jess Miller each also scored for the Spiders.
Lauren Maksym started in goal for UNC and played the first 55:32 of the game, recording 10 saves and allowing five goals. She picked up her third victory of the season in the cage. Britt Giacco finished the final 4:28 in goal, allowing one goal and making one save.
Carolina will return to action with a pair of home games next weekend, hosting Albany on Friday at 5 p.m. and Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
