Fellows Leads Navy Rout Over Longwood
from press release
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Behind a breakout performance
from freshman midfielder Jess Fellows (Vienna, Va.), the Navy
women's lacrosse team (2-1) defeated Longwood (0-1), 20-4, on
Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium. Navy was
great defensively, while also showcasing its depth on offense with
11 different players scoring at least one point. The Mids held an
8-3 lead at halftime, but broke the game wide open by scoring the
first 12 goals of the second half.
"I thought Longwood came out strong in the first and fought hard
and they had had us on our heels a bit," head coach Cindy Timchal
said. "So at halftime we talked about raising our level of play and
the team responded right from the beginning of the second
half."
Junior attack Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) scored just 34
seconds into the second half and sophomore attack Aimee Gennaro
(Havertown, Pa.) followed with a goal of her own 20 seconds later
to take full momentum of the contest. Navy scored the next 10 goals
of the game before Longwood found the back of the net with just 24
seconds remaining to end the game's scoring at 20-4.
Fellows helped Navy stake the 8-3 halftime lead with three first
half goals and followed that with three more goals in the second
half and one assist. Fellows, who started Navy's first two games of
the season but had yet to score, tallied a game-high seven points
on six goals and one assist. The lefty was 3-for-3 on free-position
attempts and also had one ground ball and one draw control.
"We knew it was just a matter of time for Jess," Timchal said. "She
got her feet wet in the first couple of games and today was her
breakout game. Now going forward we can use her play today as a
barometer to know just what she can really do for us."
Fellows' six goals was one shy of the Navy freshman record of
seven, which was set by Gennaro last season at Bucknell.
Navy's possession and transition game on Saturday was superb. The
Mids won 19 of 26 draw controls (including a 12-2 edge in the
second half) and was a perfect 13-for-13 on clear attempts.
Conversely, Longwood was just 11-for-23 on clears.
The Mids also held a 25-16 advantage in ground balls and more than
doubled the Lancers in total shots, 39-18.
Junior midfielder Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) had a great all-around
game with four goals and one assist for five points to go along
with a career-high five draw controls and three ground balls.
Young's first goal of the day came just 28 seconds into the
game.
Gennaro finished with three goals and two assists for five points
and DePompeo had two goals and one assist for three points.
Sophomore Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) continued her solid
offensive production this season with a game-high and career-high
three assists.
Junior midfielder Beth Young (Berwyn, Pa.) scooped a career-high
six ground balls and also caused two turnovers and had one goal.
Freshman attack Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) had a game-high six
draw controls and also had a goal, ground ball and caused turnover.
Sophomore attack Molly Hamilton (New Albany, Ohio) had four draw
controls, one goal and one assist.
Senior starting goalie Elaina Ponchione (Silver Spring, Md.) put on
her best performance of the season with five saves and allowed just
three goals in the game's first 35 minutes to earn her 38th career
win. Juniors Michelle Verbeeck (Wading River, N.Y.) and Charlotte
Hauser (Greenfield Center, N.Y.) filled in for the rest of the
game, playing 9:09 and 15:30, respectively.
The goalies were also aided by sound play of defensive starters
Kierstin King (Upperco, Md.), Abby Ellis (Ooltewah, Tenn.), Brijet
Mall (Cumming, Ga.) and Emily Mellin (Sherwood, Md.) and also
senior Dominique Wright (Washington, D.C.) who played a lot of
minutes off the bench.
Navy was able to use 36 total players in the game and freshman
reserve Sara Nardone (Rowley, Mass.) was all over the field,
scoring one goal on three shots to go along with a ground ball and
a caused turnover.
Navy will play two games on the road next week, heading to Monmouth
on Wednesday and Davidson on Saturday.
Notes: Timchal won her 60th career game at Navy
(60-20) and the 396th of her career (396-106). She is seeking to
become the first college lacrosse coach to win 400 games ... Navy
is now 4-1 all-time against Longwood ... This was the 14th time
Navy has scored at least 20 goals in its five-year history ...
After three games, Gennaro and DePompeo share the team lead of 12
points and Generi has a team-best 13 draw controls.
