Fairfield Opens with Win Over Monmouth

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University
women's lacrosse team opened the 2012 season with a 13-6 win over
Monmouth University. It marks the fourth consecutive season
opening win over the Hawks for the Stags.
Chloe Mangan and Addie Reilly each scored four goals, and had an
assist, to pace the Stags offense. Mangan scored the first
goal of the season 8:05 into the game, and Reilly followed 33
seconds later for a 2-0 lead. After a Monmouth tally at the
16:58 mark, Jamie Leone, Jenna Slowey and Melanie Raso touched net
in a 3:23 span to push the lead to 5-1. The Hawks would get one of
those back 5:36 before the intermission to make the score 5-2.
Monmouth struck first in the second-half on a Danielle Rakowitz
goal 5:56 into the period, to get within two goals, but Fairfield
would answer. The Stags scored the next four goals, and six
of seven, to build an 11-4 advantage with 13:08 remaining.
Both teams scored twice in the final 12:32 to keep the final margin
at seven, 13-6.
Katie Keenan picked up the win for Fairfield with a nine save
effort. She also had three ground balls and a caused
turnover. Katie Donohoe stopped nine shots in net for
Monmouth, while picking up two ground balls and causing one
turnover.
Fairfield finished with a 13-7 advantage in draw controls,
including a 9-3 edge during the second-half. Rookie Courtney
Chmil had a game-high four draw controls. The Stags also had
a ground ball advantage, 25-18, with Chmil picking up five.
She also caused two of the Stags 12 caused turnover, a category
Raso led, with five.
Fairfield returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts
Hofstra at 3 p.m. on Alumni Field.
