Rookies Help No. 13 Boston College in Opener
from press release
WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 13 Boston
College (1-0) lacrosse squad defeated Holy Cross (0-2), 16-5, in
the Eagles’ season opener on Friday afternoon at Holy Cross
Field.
Three Eagles registered a hat trick in the victory. Junior Brooke
Blue and freshman Mikaela Rix scored four goals apiece, while
graduate student Kristin Igoe added three goals and an assist.
Freshman Covie Stanwick led all scorers with six points (2 goals, 4
assists). Senior Sam Taylor added to the offensive effort with two
goals and senior Brittany Wilton tallied one of her own.
On the Eagles defensive end, senior goalkeeper Catherine Conway
turned in a strong performance, registering five saves in her first
career win.
The Eagles dominated play early, with two quick goals by Rix and
Wilton in the first minute of play. With 26:41 left in the half,
Taylor added to the BC lead with a goal, assisted by Stanwick.
Taylor Zebrowski scored with 22:43 left in the half to put the
Crusaders on the board, but Stanwick quickly found Blue in front of
the net to extend the Eagles lead back to three. A yellow card on
BC gave the Crusaders a man-up opportunity, which they capitalized
on to make it a 4-2 game with 19:33 to go in the half.
BC retaliated with back-to-back goals from Igoe to take a 6-2
advantage. Holy Cross found the back of the net, but BC quickly
retaliated as Stanwick and Blue connected once again to make it a
7-3 game with less than 14 minutes left in the half. BC maintained
control of the game to take this four goal advantage into
halftime.
After almost four minutes of scoreless play in the second half,
Holy Cross struck to pull within three. The Crusaders then cut the
Eagles lead to two by converting on a free-position shot with just
over 22 minutes left in the game.
Rix sparked a nine-goal run for the Eagles when she took a hard
shot and scored with just under 18 minutes left to make it an 8-5
game. Three minutes later, Taylor picked up a groundball at
midfield and found Stanwick, who carried the ball all the way down
the field to score and put the Eagles on top, 9-5. BC extended its
buffer to 11 with goals by Blue, Igoe, Rix, Stanwick and Taylor to
make it 16-5 with one minute remaining. Boston College was able to
keep possession of the ball in the final seconds of play to seal
the 16-5 victory in the season opener.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when they travel
to Syracuse for a 4 p.m. tilt.
