William and Mary Goes on the Road to Maryland
from press release
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The William and Mary lacrosse team will play its first road game of the season when it squares off against second-ranked Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Maryland will be the second nationally ranked team W&M has faced to begin the season after hosting No. 5 Duke in its opener on Wednesday.
Despite falling to the Blue Devils, the game was tightly contested in the first half and W&M held DU to just two goals in the final 20 minutes of action. Individually, senior Maggie Anderson led the Tribe with four points (3g, 1a), while sophomores Taelor Salmon and Katie Stillwell both tallied a pair of goals apiece. Freshman goalie Lucy Ferguson also came up big with 14 saves in her collegiate debut.
Led by a quartet of Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-Americans – Karri Ellen Johnson, Katie Schwarzmann, Iliana Sanza and Brittany Dipper – Maryland is coming off an impressive 2011 campaign in which it posted a 21-2 record and was edged by Northwestern in the national championship game.
Although Sunday's contest will mark the teams' first meeting since 2003, the two programs had played in each of the previous 27 seasons.
Sunday's game will be the first of three consecutive road contests for the Tribe, as it will play at Navy next Wednesday (Feb. 15) and at Virginia Tech on Feb. 25.
