Syracuse Schedule Includes Seven NCAA Tournament Qualifiers
from press release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's
lacrosse squad and head coach Gary Gait have a tough 2011 season
ahead as the Orange faces seven opponents that qualified for the
2010 NCAA Tournament. Syracuse plays seven home games, three
against BIG EAST teams.
The Orange opens the season at home against local rival Colgate on
February 17. Syracuse then travels to Stanford on February 20 and
returns home to face Virginia on February 27. The Orange's comeback
attempt against the Cavaliers last season came up just short as it
allowed the game-winning goal with 1:33 remaining in a 14-13
setback.
Syracuse plays 11 games on the road, which include five BIG EAST
matchups. The Orange has a six-game road streak where it travels to
take on defending national champion Maryland (March 12), Towson
(March 15), Florida (March 19), and five-time national champion
Northwestern (March 23). The game against the Terrapins will be a
rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament semifinals, a game Maryland
won, 14-5. Northwestern, which defeated the Orange on a goal in the
final minute of play last season, advanced to the 2010 national
finals where it lost to the Terrapins.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play at Rutgers (March 26) and travels to
Dartmouth (April 4) before returning home to face Connecticut on
April 8 and Notre Dame on April 10. It took four overtimes to
decide the last meeting between the Orange and Fighting Irish.
Syracuse scored at the 2:20 mark of the fourth extra session for a
12-11 victory in the semifinals of the 2010 BIG EAST Tournament
The Orange travels to Washington, D.C. April 16 to take on BIG
EAST rival Georgetown. Syracuse lost to the Hoyas in last year's
regular-season finale and in the BIG EAST Tournament Finals, but
defeated Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Syracuse returns home to take on BIG EAST opponents Louisville
(April 21) and Cincinnati (April 23). The Orange hosts Cornell on
April 26 in its final home game. Syracuse ends the regular season
on the road at Loyola (April 29) and Villanova (May 1).
The BIG EAST Tournament will be hosted by Georgetown on May 5 and
7. The NCAA tournament begins on May 14. The semifinals and finals
will be held on May 27 and 29 at Stony Brook University in Stony
Brook, N.Y.
Syracuse finished the 2010 season with a 15-7 record. The Orange
advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament where it lost to
eventual national champion Maryland.
