North Carolina Blows Out High Point in Regular Season Finale

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Second-ranked North
Carolina got four goals and four assists from Becky Lynch and three
goals and three assists from Corey Donohoe and completed its
regular season with a 20-4 win over High Point on Friday afternoon
at Fetzer Field. Lynch moved into second place on the UNC career
assist chart in the game. She now has 67 assists in her career and
a school-record 32 this season. Carolina's 20 goals were a season
high.
With the win, the Tar Heels close the 2011 regular season with a
13-5 record. High Point, in its first season as a varsity program,
falls to 15-4.
In addition to the output of Lynch and Donohoe, Laura Zimmerman had
four goals and one assist, Sarah Kuonen had two goals and two
assists and Brittney Coppa had two goals and one assist. Abbey
Friend scored twice for the Tar Heels and Kara Cannizzaro had a
goal and an assist. Margaret Corzel and Taylor George each scored
once for Carolina.
High Point got single goals from Jasmine Jordan, Mackenzie Carroll,
Christie Dougherty and Chelsea Thompson.
Zimmerman started the game off with a free position goal just 25
seconds into the game. Twenty-eight seconds later, Lynch made it
2-0 with a goal off a pass from Donohoe. Shortly thereafter, it was
3-0 when Zimmerman's second goal came off a pass from Lynch, who
then scored back-to-back goals to make it 5-0 and force a Panthers
timeout at the 25:19 mark.
It was more of the same throughout the rest of the first half as
the Tar Heels cruised to a 15-2 lead at the break. Lynch had three
goals and four assists by halftime and Zimmerman had four goals and
one assist in the opening half. Carolina outshot the Panthers 22-4
and won 17 of 19 draws in the opening half.
In the second half, Lynch scored her fourth goal off a pass from
Donohoe less than 10 minutes into the period to put the Tar Heels
ahead 16-2. HPU scored to make it 16-3 before Carolina scored twice
more to lead 18-3. The Tar Heels cruised the rest of the way to the
victory.
Lauren Maksym started in the cage for UNC and played the first 40
minutes, allowing two goals and recording two saves. Britt Giacco
relieved Maksym and finished with four saves and two goals
allowed.
The Tar Heels outshot High Point by a 27-11 margin and won 21 of 27
draws.
The NCAA will announce bids for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday
night. Carolina hopes to host a first-round game next weekend in
Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels were No. 5 in this week's NCAA RPI
report, trailing Northwestern, Maryland, Florida and Duke.
