Georgetown Captures Big East's Top Seed
from press release
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 16 Georgetown
University women's lacrosse team (9-7, 7-1 BIG EAST) won a share of
the BIG EAST Regular Season Title on Sunday with a 9-8 victory over
the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (9-7, 3-5 BIG EAST) at
Yurcak Field. The victory also clinched the top seed in the BIG
EAST Tournament which begins Thursday and will be held at
Georgetown's Multi-Sport Field.
"We showed a lot of resolve by playing to the end today and I
thought we scrapped well," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried.
"Winning a BIG EAST Regular Season Championship is always special
and it's a huge accomplishment for this program."
The championship didn't come easy as the Scarlet Knights attempted
to spoil Georgetown's day. The Blue & Gray started strong as
sophomore attacker Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) hit a
free position shot within the first three minutes and freshman
midfielder Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) added
another as GU took a 2-0 lead.
The Scarlet Knights had an answer, tying it up at 9:23 before
sophomore midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep)
scored at 5:27. Rutgers matched the Blue & Gray in the waning
minutes of the half as the teams went into the break tied at
three.
Sophomore midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep)
started it off in the second half with a goal less than two minutes
in. However, Rutgers quickly took its first lead of the contest
with a 2-0 run.
The Hoyas came back and moved ahead when Thomas and senior attacker
Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola) both found the back of the
cage. The squads traded goals, but another 2-0 Scarlet Knights run
gave them the lead with ten minutes remaining on the clock.
Georgetown found a way, however, as Franklin netted her second
score of the game and senior Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City,
Md./Mount Hebron) assisted to tie it at eight. The game winner came
with 2:08 remaining when the pair connected once again and Giles
scored making the final 9-8.
Three Hoyas had two goals each and Franklin led the squad with two
goals and an assist. GU outshot Rutgers, 21-15, and forced 17
turnovers.
This is Georgetown's 10th BIG EAST Regular Season Title in the past
11 years and the fourth time in five tries that the squad has been
the top seed in the conference tournament.
The tournament begins on Thursday at Multi-Sport Field with No. 2
Syracuse against No. 3 Loyola in the first game at 5:30 p.m., and
the No. 1 Hoyas taking on No. 4 Notre Dame in the second contest at
approximately 8:15 p.m. Both games will be televised live on CBS
College Sports and live stats will be available at
