Tribe Rallies Past Delaware for OT Win

from press release

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's lacrosse squad suffered yet another heartbreaking loss Friday night as the Blue Hens let a three-goal second half lead slip away and dropped a tough 11-10 Colonial Athletic Association setback to William & Mary at soggy Delaware Stadium.

The Tribe (9-5, 4-1 CAA) scored six unanswered goals in the second half to eventually send the game into overtime and then won the marathon contest when Taelor Salmon scored with 1:55 left in the third overtime period.

Delaware (7-9, 2-4 CAA), still clinging to an outside chance to earn one of four berths into the upcoming CAA Tournament, recovered late in the second half and sent the game into extra sessions when freshman Bridget Burns tallied off a nice feed form Kalyn McDonough (at right) with just 28 seconds left in regulation.

However, the Hens could not put together any strong scoring opportunities after that and dropped their second overtime game of the season. Delaware has now lost five games by three goals or less.

McDonough finished with three goals and as assist on the wet and chilly night while Julianna Jeffers netted three goals and Quinn Daly, Morgan Leonard, Corrine Drost, and Burns each scored once.

William & Mary got two goals each from Ashley Holofcener, Grace Golden, and Molly Wannen with Holofcener adding two assists.

Delaware will close out the regular season Sunday when the Hens host Old Dominion at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium. The Hens need to win to keep their slim post-season chances alive.
