Rutgers Rebounds with Win over Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Rutgers
women’s lacrosse team (8-5, 2-3 BIG EAST) rebounded with a
12-9 road win at Cincinnati on Sunday, April 17, in Nippert
Junior Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) led Rutgers with three goals, while four other Scarlet Knights – Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.), Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.), Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) and Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) – scored a pair of goals each in the win.
Rutgers opened the game with a 3-0 run on goals from Sbrilli, Steinberg and junior Brittany Davis (Wading River, N.Y.). Cincinnati took over the lead with four-straight; however the Scarlet Knights scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 6-4 halftime advantage.
The see-saw battle continued in the second half as the Bearcats followed the halftime break with three consecutive scores, pulling ahead of the Scarlet Knights 7-6. The lead changed hands two more times with Rutgers going up 8-7 on back-to-back goals from Watts and Welsh.
Cincinnati took its final lead three minutes later, scoring a pair to make it 9-8.
Trailing by one goal with 10 minutes left in regulation, the Scarlet Knights found the scores they needed down the stretch, tallying four straight en route to the 12-9 victory. Watts scored twice, while Welsh and Marino each added a goal to help seal the win.
Rutgers will play three regular-season home games beginning with Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m.
