Quinnipiac Blows Out LIU in NEC Contest

from press release

HAMDEN, Conn. -- Juniors Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) each tallied six goals, while sophomore Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) dished out a career-high seven assists to lead the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team over Northeast Conference opponent Long Island, 21-7, on Sunday afternoon at Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. The Bobcats' record improves to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the NEC, while the loss drops Long Island to 1-13 overall and 1-6 in NEC action.

"I am very happy for our seniors," head coach Danie Caro said. "It's always great to finish your last regular season home game on a high note, and they did."

With six goals apiece, Gibney matched her career-high, while Caroleo matched her season-high total.

"Devon and Marissa played extremely well today at both ends of the field," said Caro. "When they both play like that, we're a really dangerous team."

After compiling a career-high six assists just three games ago against Columbia on Wednesday, Apr. 6, Allen tallied seven against the Blackbirds. The seven assists in a game are the most since Katie Latonick grabbed eight assists in a 14-9 victory over Bryant on April, 3, 2009.

"Sarah had another great day with seven assists," said Caro. "She is seeing the field really well right now and she's being very patient feeding the ball."

Senior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) added five points on two goals and three assists. Senior Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) netted two goals and one assist, while junior Jennifer Skipper (Centerport, N.Y.) added one goal and two assists in the contest. Sophomore Lianne Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) and freshman Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each tallied two points on one goal and one assist in the game. Seniors Laura Iannotti (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) each scored one goal, while sophomore Chelsea Guerrera (Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman Kearney Sneath (Branford, Conn.) both added one assist in the win.

"Christine had her second five-point game of the weekend," said Caro. "She's peaking at the right time for us."

Gibney and Kelly led the Bobcats with four and three ground balls, respectively, on the afternoon. Gibney also led the squad with four caused turnovers while Kelly added three. Skipper and Caroleo each grabbed four draw controls on the afternoon, helping Quinnipiac earn a 20-10 advantage over Long Island in the game.

"Kaitlyn was outstanding again, and we've come to rely on her playing at that level every game," said Caro. "She sets the tone for the entire defense, and they're keeping up with her lead."

Senior Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield, Conn.) and junior Noelle Martello (Westbury, Conn.) each played one half for Quinnipiac and combined to make 11 saves in the game. Their counterparts Jacqueline Simonian and Gina Haber combined to make 14 saves in net for the Blackbirds.

The Bobcats scored seven of the game's first eight goals to take a 7-1 lead with 22:07 remaining in the first half.  Caroleo netted three goals, Gibney two goals and Iannotti grabbed one score during that time frame. Quinnipiac pushed its lead to 12-3 with 4:00 remaining in the first half, as Gibney and Caroleo each tallied two scores and Sinnigen netted her first of the game.

Despite Long Island ending the first half on a three goal run, Quinnipiac responded by scoring the first five goals of the second half to increase its lead, 17-6. Matuszczak, Caroleo, Toomey, Gibney, and Kelly each scored for Quinnipiac. After Long Island scored its final goal of the contest with 11:12 remaining in the game, Quinnipiac netted the final four goals of the game on scores from Sinnigen, Gibney, Tinsley, and Skipper.

"I was very happy to be able to play everyone that dressed today," said Caro. "We were very proud that there wasn't a letdown when some of the starters came out."

Quinnipiac returns to action on Thursday, Apr. 21 when it travels to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
