JMU Overcomes Slow Start to Beat Delaware

HARRISONBURG, Va.-- The ninth-ranked James
Madison lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a 9-5 Colonial
Athletic Association win over Delaware on Sunday afternoon at the
JMU Lacrosse Complex.
The Dukes improved to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Delaware's record stands at 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the CAA.
JMU remained tied for first place in the CAA standings with Towson,
who beat George Mason on Sunday to also improve its league record
to 4-1.
The Dukes had a slow start Sunday, as Delaware scored just 14
seconds into the contest and upped its lead to 2-0 with a score
9:10 into the match.
Blue Hen senior Julianna Jeffers (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) got
her team's first goal, and junior Kalyn McDonough (Kennett Square,
Pa./Unionville) added the second.
However, JMU ran off three goals in a span of just 53 seconds to
start a run of six unanswered goals to close the first half.
Junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) got the Dukes on
the scoreboard first on a free-position attempt at 19:37.
Just 27 seconds later, junior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster,
Md./Mercy) scored off a pass senior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington,
Pa./Abington). Redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow
(Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) tallied an unassisted goal just
24 seconds after McHugh's score.
Lomady scored again on a free-position shot with 15:15 remaining,
and redshirt sophomore Rebecca McLouth (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore)
netted back-to-back scores less than a minute apart to send the
Dukes into halftime up 6-2. McLouth's first goal came at 8:16
and her second at 7:19.
Delaware scored the first goal of the second half to close the gap
to 6-3 but could get no closer the rest of the way.
"I was proud of the team; I think it's tough to rebound after a
tough loss (to Towson) Friday night," said JMU Head Coach Shelley
Klaes-Bawcombe. "I asked the juniors to come out to play hard
today because it was going to be an emotional day for our
seniors. They did a great job of stepping up, in particular
Becca McLouth finishing some goals early in the first half and
Ariel Lane in draw controls and free position shots."
JMU had balanced scoring with McLouth, Lomady, Ancarrow and Lane
each finishing with two goals. Ancarrow and Lomady also each
had an assist.
The Dukes out-shot Delaware 26-12 and dominated the draw controls
12-4.
Dukes' redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media,
Pa./Penncrest) made three saves, and Delaware senior goalkeeper
Makenzie Worthington (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) finished with 10
saves.
JMU's ground ball leaders were junior Annie Brophy (Berwyn,
Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and Menghetti, who each had three.
Lane had a game-high four draw controls, and junior Cally Chakrian
(East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) led the team in caused turnovers
with two.
The Dukes' senior class was recognized prior to the game. JMU
seniors include Lomady, Diana Apel (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg), Lexy
Schwabenland (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Meghan Wienecke
(Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Caitlin Sullivan (Kennesaw,
Ga./Harrison) and team manager Lauren Wojcik (Cinnaminson,
N.J./Cinnaminson).
