Top-Ranked Terps Double Up Virginia Tech
from press release
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Danielle Kirk and Sarah
Mollison notched hat tricks to lead No. 1 Maryland as it capped a
perfect ACC regular season record Saturday with a 16-8 victory at
Virginia Tech.
As the top seed in next week's ACC Championship in Cary, N.C.,
Maryland (15-0, 5-0 ACC) will battle the winner of Thursday's
Boston College/Virginia matchup Friday at 5 p.m. The game will be
available live on the ACC Network at theacc.com.
In addition to multi-goal showings from Mollison and Kirk, Beth
Glaros and Alex Aust added two goals each to spark the Terps to
their 25th consecutive win. Saturday's game was moved indoors to
the Rector Field House due to inclement weather in Blacksburg.
The Terps offense wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, netting
their first goal a mere 36 seconds into the contest. Virginia Tech
(10-7, 1-4 ACC) answered two minutes later before Maryland went on
a hefty 10-0 run, highlighted by two goals each from Aust, Glaros
and Mollison.
Two early goals from Kirk and Bria Philips kicked off the second
stanza and extended Maryland's lead to 13-2. The squad's exchanged
goals the remainder of the period with Maryland using its entire
bench for the majority of the second half.
"We came out strong today and did a nice job focusing on the things
we wanted to accomplish," head coach Cathy Reese, who has now won
at least a share of the ACC regular season crown in each of her
first five seasons, said.
Maryland, which held its opponent to 10 or fewer goals for the 11th
consecutive match, seeks its third straight ACC Championship next
week in Cary at WakeMed Soccer Park.
