Iona Hunts Down Red Foxes, 14-10
from press release
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Iona College lacrosse team (5-10, 3-2 MAAC) ended its slate of 2011 regular season road games on a high note with a 14-10 triumph at Marist (4-9, 1-3 MAAC) to snap a three-game skid.
The Gaels were lifted to victory by a quartet of hat tricks from Brenna Lade, Kylie Gregory, Caitlyn Collins, and Elizabeth Coholan. Casey Scully and Angela Grous added one goal each to round out the scorers for the Maroon & Gold. Lade, Coholan, Scully, and Nina Veneziale all picked up one assist in the win.
The tight contest featured six ties and three lead changes, with Iona coming back from a 7-5 hole to tie the score with 22 minutes remaining. The squad pulled in front 39 seconds later on an unassisted tally by Gregory, but the Red Foxes quickly matched to knot the game at 8-all. The Gaels then went on a march, launching a string of six unanswered goals to take a cushy 14-8 lead with 4:57 to play. Despite Marist recording the final two goals of the day, Iona locked down its third conference win of the year with one matchup left on the schedule.
The Gaels just edged the Red Foxes 26-25 in ground balls and 14-12 in draw controls. Goalkeeper Maria Ortiz made ten saves while Ashley Casiano denied seven for Marist.
The regular season will draw to a close on April 21, when Iona hosts Fairfield (10-4, 4-0 MAAC) at 11:00 am at Mazzella Field.
