Two Harvard Players Net Hat Tricks in Win
from press release
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Harvard women's
lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 10-6, Wednesday night at the
Holy Cross Field to improve to 6-4 on the season. Jennifer
VanderMeulen and Danielle Tetreault both scored hat tricks in the
winning effort.
Five different Crimson players scored and four had assists for the
Crimson. VanderMeulen added two assists to her stat line, while
Tetreault had one. Tyler Petropulos added two goals and an assist
and Chelsey Newman and Kyle Keating each found the back of the net.
Melanie Baskind, who also had a handout, won three draw controls
and collected three ground balls, while Lauren Tomkinson grabbed
three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Mariah Pewarski also
caused two of Holy Cross's 15 turnovers.
The Crimson got on the scoreboard first, putting in the first two
scores of the half. Jennifer VanderMeulen scored on a free position
shot after 2:47 of play and Petropulos put in an unassisted tally
four and a half minutes later. The teams traded goals for the rest
of the half with Tetreault finding Kyle Keating in front on the net
and VanderMeulen handing off to Tetreault to give the Crimson a 4-2
lead. After Holy Cross pulled to within a goal, VanderMeulen scored
with 13 seconds left in the half to put the visiting team up,
5-3.
VanderMeulen extend the Crimson lead to six seven minutes into the
second frame. Two scores from the Crusaders made it a 6-5 game
midway through the stanza. But Newman's unassisted goal and
Tetreault's goal off a Petropulos feed gave the Crimson a
three-point cushion. The Crusaders found the back of the net one
more time in the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Harvard defense held Crusaders leading scorer Kat Sutton
scoreless and snapped her 43 game scoring streak. Kerry Clark
made seven second half saves to bring her season total to 65.
Harvard travels to Princeton for an Ancient Eight match-up Saturday
at 1 p.m.
