UMass Stays Unbeaten on Road, in A-10

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Katie Ferris tallied five
goals, while Dayna Defliese, Jesse O'Donnell, and Nina Sarcona each
scored three to lead the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 16-10 win
over St. Bonaventure at Alfred University on Sunday afternoon. The
win keeps UMass perfect in the Atlantic 10 (4-0) and in road games
this year (7-0).
The Minutewomen (11-2, 4-0 A-10) will host George Washington and
Richmond next weekend at McGuirk Stadium. St. Bonaventure falls to
4-6 overall and 1-3 in the A-10.
Haley Smith rounded out the scoring for the Minutewomen with a pair
of goals, while Ali Houlis and Jackie Lyons handed out a pair of
assists each.
Danielle Drain scored three goals to lead the Bonnies, while Cara
Callahan and Christine Hanley each scored two.
Katie Florence earned the win in goal for UMass with five saves,
while Karly Kocis took the loss for SBU making 16 saves.
The game opened with each team trading goals until Defliese,
O'Donnell and Ferris put together a three-goal run giving UMass a
5-2 lead with 3:48 left in the first half.
St. Bona's Catie Greene scored at the 3:18 mark to stop the run,
but Ferris and Smith each scored in the final minute before
halftime to put UMass up 7-3 at the break.
The Bonnies closed the gap in the first five minutes of the second
half pulling within three, 9-6, after back-to-back goals from
Lauren Michaels and Emily Kane.
Ferris, Defliese, and Sarcona each strung together three unanswered
goals to push the lead back to 12-6 with 20:22 left and the two
teams traded goals throughout the balance of the game.
O'Donnell iced the win with her third goal of the game with 21
seconds remaining.
UMass outshot the Bonnies 39-to-20 for the game including a 21-to-6 effort in the first half. The Minutewomen won the possession battle collecting 21 groundballs and 16 draw controls compared to 9 and 12, respectively, for St. Bona.
