Robert Morris Bounces Blackbirds in Big Way

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Robert Morris University
women's lacrosse team pushed its winning streak to three Sunday
with a, 19-8, win against Northeast Conference rival Long
The Colonials (5-8, 4-2) outscored the Blackbirds (1-11, 1-4) 12-2 in the first half and never looked back give Robert Morris its third consecutive conference victory. Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century) and Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) each found the net five times and posted six points in the game to lead Robert Morris to a win that keep the Colonials in fourth place in the NEC standings.
Robert Morris picked up where it left off last game as the Colonials scored four unanswered goals to start the game and O'Donnell had a role in each. O'Donnell scored 36 seconds into the game and then assisted on an Emily VanDyne (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) goal four minutes later before netting two more goals to make it 4-0 Colonials 6:47 into the contest.
Long Island responded with a pair of goal both coming off free position's to cut the lead to 4-2. That would be as close as the Blackbird would get as Robert Morris rattled off eight consecutive goals to close the half lead 12-2 at the intermission.
Trombetta notched three of her goals during the Colonials eight-goal run to end the half but the offensive onslaught was marked by team play. Six different Colonials scored during the run and all but three of the eight goals were assisted.
MacKenzie Lawler (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) and Trombetta each netted early second half goals to push the Robert Morris run to 10 and give the Colonials a 14-2 advantage at the 27:00 of the second half. LIU netted back-to-back goals for the second time in the game to cut the advantage to 14-4 but O'Donnell scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game and Rachel Engel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) added a third to put the game away for the Colonials.
Nine different Colonials found the net in total as Robert Morris moved to 4-2 when scoring in double figures. RMU outshot LI 29-17 while winning the ground ball battle 22-17 and posting a 7-for-8 day on clears.
Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) played a majority of the minutes and picked up the win while posting five saves. Angelina Gasparo (Philadelphia, Pa. / Nazareth Academy) finished the game in net for Robert Morris playing the last 10:05 of the contest.
O'Donnell caused four turnovers for the Colonials and picked up four ground balls as well. Elizabeth Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) dominated draw controls earning seven but also netted two goals, passed out three assists, caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
The Colonials return to action and Joe Walton Stadium at 1 p.m. Friday as they welcome Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's.
