Here Come the Hoyas: Kirr's Career Day Propels Georgetown Past Louisville
from press release
WASHINGTON -- Senior attacker Jordy Kirr
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) had a big day scoring two goals
and posting four assists as the Georgetown University women's
lacrosse squad downed the University of Louisville Cardinals (8-4,
1-2 BIG EAST), 19-12, Sunday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. The
Blue & Gray improved to 6-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in BIG
EAST play.
Kirr's four helpers gave her 101 career assists which broke the
program record of 98 previously held by Sheehan Stanwick and set in
2001. Coupled with her 109 career goals, Kirr is now the first
player in Georgetown history to have 100 goals and 100 assists in
their career.
"I'm so excited for Jordy, she's worked incredibly hard to get
here," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "Although these are
individual milestones, holding the assist record shows what an
unselfish player she is and her 100 goals show how much she means
to our team. Jordy should be very proud of what she has
accomplished."
Kirr and the Hoyas started the scoring early as Georgetown opened
the game with a 6-1 run including two Kirr assists to break the
record. Louisville countered at 11:27, but the Hoyas had an answer
as Kirr assisted on sophomore Sophia Thomas' (Lutherville,
Md./Maryvale Prep) third score of the afternoon. The pair combined
for three goals in the first half.
The Cardinals had one more goal at 9:29, but Kirr continued to
exploit the Louisville defense finding the back of the cage twice
in the closing minutes to make it 9-3 at the break.
The squads traded goals for the first 15 minutes of the second half
as the Cards tried to dig themselves out of the hole. A score from
senior Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) on the
assist from Thomas gave the Hoyas the eight-goal lead, 15-7, but
Louisville had an answer rattling off three scores to pull within
five.
Sophomore Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored with the assist from senior Mary Wittelsberger (Parkton, Md./Hereford) to stop the run, but the Cardinals had two more goals in them before the end of the game to keep it close. Georgetown managed three scores in the final eight minutes to hold the Cardinals at bay making the final 19-12.
GU outshot UofL, 39-23, and had 12 ground balls to Louisville's
nine. The Cardinals held an advantage in draw controls, 19-13, but
turned the ball over 16 times as Georgetown's ride continued to be
effective.
Thomas led the Hoyas with seven points on five goals and two
assists and Kirr notched six points on two goals and four assists.
Senior Mary Beth Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added
three goals as 10 different players tallied a point and seven had
multiple goals for the Blue & Gray.
Georgetown will be back in action on Saturday as the Hoyas host No.
13 Syracuse at Multi-Sport Field to cap off the four-game home
stand. The opening draw is scheduled for noon and the game will be
televised live on CBS College Sports. Live stats and an audio-only
broadcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
