St. Mary's No Match for No. 9 Stanford

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team
was overmatched against No. 9 Stanford, losing to the Cardinal by a
20-7 score in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Sunday
afternoon. The Gaels held their own early, scoring three goals and
trailed 6-3 with 15:05 left before Stanford closed the opening half
on a 6-1 run.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 2-8, 1-3 MPSF, while Stanford
improves to 11-1, 3-0 MPSF. The Cardinal is now 18-0 all-time
against the Gaels.
Saint Mary's was led by Mariah Walk and Julie Munroe with two goals
apiece. Caroline Mahony, Nisa Orozco-McCormick and Krista Morgan
also scored for the Gaels. Kathleen Worsdale recorded 12 saves in
goal. Ciara Breckenridge led SMC with four groundballs while
Jillian Chong, Munroe and Walk had two apiece.
Stanford was led by Sarah Flynn with seven goals, while Anna Kim
scored three times. Jennifer Lang added two goals while eight other
Cardinal also scored. Lyndsey Munoz, Kathy Newhouse and Catherine
Swanson had three groundballs apiece.
After Stanford scored the first two goals of the game, Mahony
scored for SMC to pull the Gaels within 2-1 with 26:23 left.
Stanford scored four consecutive times before Orozco-McCormick and
Munroe scored back-to-back goals to pull SMC within 6-3 at the
15:05 mark. Stanford ended the half on a 6-1 run to take the 12-4
lead at halftime.
In the second half, Stanford outscored SMC 8-3 as the Gaels goals
were by Munroe, Walk and Morgan.
Stanford outshot SMC 46-18 and had a 20-17 edge in groundballs.
Stanford held a 19-8 edge in draw controls and converted 6-of-10
free-position shots. Saint Mary's converted 2-of-4 of its
free-position shots.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Wednesday, April 6 when it hosts
UC Davis. The MPSF game will start at 4:00 p.m. at Saint Mary's
Stadium.
