No. 20 UMass Opens A-10 Play with Win

AMHERST, Mass. -- Katie Ferris had a
season-high six points on five goals and an assist as the No. 13
UMass women's lacrosse team opened Atlantic 10 play with a 12-9 win
over Temple on Thursday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. The
Minutewomen will head to La Salle for an 11 AM opening draw on
UMass improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple falls to 2-8 (0-1 A-10) for the year.
Along with Ferris, Jackie Lyons scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Minutewomen. Riley Perry, Dayna Defliese, Jesse O'Donnell and Haley Smith, and Tanner Guarino each tallied goals for UMass. Katie Florence made four saves playing in the first half, while Nina Sarcona made two saves in the second half.
Temple was led Stephany Parcell's three goals and Charlotte Swavola's two goals and two assists. Tess Bishop took the loss making eight saves.
The Minutewomen jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first 10 minutes
of play thanks to a pair of Ferris' goals and tallies from Smith
The Owls scored three of the final four goals to end the first half cutting UMass' lead to 5-4.
UMass started the second half strong scoring five goals in the first seven minutes to take a 10-4 lead when O'Donnell scored with 23:50 remaining.
Trailing by six with just under 10 minutes left in the game, Temple scored three straight goals making it a 12-9 game with 2:48 to go, but UMass was able to gain possession to run out the final moments preserving the win.
The Minutewomen outshot the Owls 31-to-20 for the game and earned 17 groundballs to 12 for the Temple. The Owls won the draw control battle 13-to-10, but turned the ball over 18 times compared to just nine miscues for the Minutewomen.
