from press release

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The American University lacrosse team defeated Columbia 11-8 Wednesday afternoon in New York City to notch its fifth win in six games.

Samantha Marshall recorded her second straight hat trick with three goals to lead the Eagles, her sixth hat trick of the year. Bernadette Maher and Lisa Schaaf scored twice with Schaaf also registering one assist. Kaska Komosinski recorded six saves en route to her sixth victory of the year while Paige Lin and Emily Maher each tallied three caused turnovers and three groundballs.

American (6-4, 2-1) got on the board early as Schaaf fed Kimberly Collins for a score 35 seconds into the game. Chiara Speziale gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead two minutes later and American was on top 4-2 with 21:34 remaining following Maher's first tally of the day. Columbia evened the score at four with back-to-back goals before Marshall made it a 5-4 game heading into the half.

The teams traded goals early in the second frame until consecutive Marshall scores put the Eagles ahead for good 9-6. A pair of Schaaf goals gave American an 11-7 margin with under nine minutes to play as the team held on for the 11-8 victory.

American will return to action Saturday, April 2 when the team travels to Bethlehem, Pa. for a 3:00 p.m. showdown with Lehigh.
