Fairfield's Raso Wins MAAC Rookie Award
from press release
For the third consecutive Monday a member of the Fairfield
University women's lacrosse team was recognized as the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League Rookie of the
Week. Melanie Raso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) becomes the first
player this season to earn the rookie award twice, while giving the
Stags four of the last five weekly rookie accolades.
Raso, a graduate of Farmingdale High School, finished the Stags two games with four goals, an assist, five draw controls a ground ball and a caused turnover. Against ninth-ranked Florida she had three points - putting two of her three shots into the back of the net, as well as handing out an assist. In the Stags win over UC Davis at home on Saturday Raso again struck twice for scores, as well as controlling three draws.
The February 22 MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, Raso has started all 10 games this season for the Stags. She is leading the team with 22 goals and is third with 24 points. She has a team-best 29 draw controls this season, which ranks 34th in the nation through games of March 27. Raso is 98th in the nation at 2.2 goals per game.
Raso and the Stags are 6-4 on the year and open MAAC play on Wednesday at Siena College. The Stags have won 18 consecutive MAAC regular season games, the second longest streak in school and program history, and are the three-time defending regular season league champions. Game time on Wednesday has been moved to 4 p.m.
