Virginia Tech Snaps Two-Game Losing Streak
from press release
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Returning home in hopes
to bounce back from two tough losses, the Virginia Tech lacrosse
team did exactly what it set out to do and earned a big, 18-10
victory over Old Dominion at Thompson Field. Senior Caitlyn Wier
paced the Tech offense with six points on the day, while junior
Jessica Nonn spearheaded the scoring with four goals. For the Lady
Monarchs, Lisa Bernardini tallied three goals in the game.
The Hokies (7-4) got out to a good start as juniors Ryan Rotanz and Morgan Widlake got Tech out to an early lead. ODU (1-5) would finally break through the Tech defense in the 26th minute but the Hokies continued to pile on the offense.
The Lady Monarchs continued to chip away at the Hokies’ lead, but a three-goal run in the middle of the first half helped set the Hokies up for a 9-6 lead heading into the intermission.
Nonn, who scored the game-winner in the final seconds last year’s game, put away her third goal of the day to begin the second half, and just over five minutes later senior Allie Emala sparked another three-goal streak for Tech.
With just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, Wier buried a pass from Widlake to ignite a five-goal run for the Hokies. Wier also put away a free position shot, later in that run, to cap off her perfect, 3-for-3 shooting day.
ODU rallied with two goals in the final two minutes, but the difference was too large at that point.
The Hokies dominated the Lady Monarchs in nearly every statistical category, outshooting them 38-17 and winning 22 of the 30 draw controls in the game.
Sophomore Alex Gale made two saves on the day for Tech, while Sarah Geary, in goal for ODU, finished the afternoon with eight saves.
Tech returns to action on Tuesday, March 29 as it heads to Lynchburg, Va., to take on Liberty at 5:30 p.m.
